Garreth Schuh

Garreth was born in Seattle and has also lived in New Orleans and Philadelphia. He attended the University of Washington and received a Master’s Degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Garreth has made art of all kinds throughout his life, and has led parallel careers in art and architecture. His current work focuses on oil painting in several genres, including architectural and quirky portraiture. After a spinal cord injury, Garreth rebuilt his life around his disability, and is now an advocate for that community. His architecture and art is heavily influenced by insight gained through disability. He is also a husband and father and currently lives, works and contributes in a small community in South Seattle.

“My current paintings are a series of quirky and disjointed buildings, figures, still life and colorful abstracts. I paint in layers and typically have four to five paintings going at any time so as to be productive while waiting for layers to dry. Inspiration comes in many forms, but sun-bleached buildings and weathered artifacts are regular topics.”

“Living through NW winters, I find that I use color and contrast as an antidote to the gray weather. I embrace an eclectic convergence of images, ideas and influences in my art and I enjoy negotiating a considerable level of chaos in the mix. I bring a high degree of craft to my work and often channel my architectural experience into creating works that are both immersive and an object in their own right. “Abbreviated Realism through the lens of Modernism” was a nice review that I received from one astute viewer.”
